The comparison
McConnell's 2021 judgment was about Trump's conduct in office. It was a serious charge. It was not a small policy fight.1 In 2024 he endorsed Trump. His reason was that Republican voters had made Trump the nominee. That reason did not take back his 2021 judgment. It did not explain why that judgment no longer kept Trump from his support.2
What he said after January 6

McConnell also called Trump's conduct a “disgraceful dereliction of duty.” He voted to acquit. He said the Senate had no power to convict a former president. He also said Trump could still face criminal and civil accountability.1
What he said when power was at stake
On March 6, 2024, McConnell endorsed Trump. This came after Nikki Haley left the Republican primary. His public reason was simple. Trump had won Republican voters and would be the nominee.2
The explanation, fairly stated
A party leader may believe voters pick the nominee, not him. He may also like that nominee's policies more than the other party's. That explains the political reason. It does not square the endorsement with his own words about morality and the Constitution.
The leadership test
McConnell called Trump “practically and morally responsible” for an attack on the constitutional transfer of power. If that does not disqualify a candidate, what would? A standard that vanishes when the votes are counted does little. It works like a warning label the institution chose to ignore.
