The established connection
Flynn did more than comment from far away. The January 6 Committee put him among the election-denial VIPs who were guarded at the December 12 rally. It also placed him in the VIP area at the Ellipse on January 6.12 The same record says he did not join the march to the Capitol.
The security relationship
The Committee said Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes worked with the First Amendment Praetorians, or 1AP, to guard Flynn and Byrne at the December 12 “Stop the Steal” rally.1 In Flynn's interview, investigators asked if 1AP member Geoffrey Flohr gave him security. They asked if Flynn or anyone else paid for it. Flynn used his constitutional rights and did not answer.3
A refusal is not a confession
The Fifth Amendment protects innocent and guilty people alike. Flynn's silence does not prove payment, planning, or a crime. The security claim rests on the Committee's finding. It does not rest on his refusal to answer.
January 6: present, but not marching
The Committee's report says rally organizer Caroline Wren expected Flynn, Alex Jones, and Roger Stone to march to the Capitol. Stone did not come to the Ellipse. Wren asked Flynn if he would march with Jones. Flynn said no. He said it was freezing.2
That detail cuts against a bigger version of the story. Flynn was close to the effort to overturn the election. The record on that is strong. But it does not show that he joined the Capitol march. It does not show he entered the building. It does not show he led those who did.
Why the whole sequence matters
On December 18, Flynn joined a White House meeting. That was six days after the rally where those groups guarded him. The meeting was about extreme federal action to change the election.4 On January 6 he came back to the movement's main rally. Here is what the record supports. Flynn kept showing up. He took part in the campaign to overturn the election. The record does not show he ran the attack.
The Committee's report of the December 12 security. Flynn's part in the December 18 White House meeting. His presence at the Ellipse on January 6. And his choice not to march.
Not establishedWho paid for Flynn's security. Whether Flynn entered the Capitol. Whether he directed violence. Whether the security setup was itself a criminal deal.
